“Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.”- Ludwig van Beethoven. It is through this same revelation that Ashley Marsé (pronounced MAR-SAY) has understood the calling on her life in order to share her gift of song with others.
Born and raised in Houston Texas, Ashley was first introduced to the stage at the tender age of four, although singing is her first love she’s been gifted with many talents that include acting, dancing, and writing. Her creative spirit allows her to thrive in all aspects of her life. Her experiences have allowed her to participate in several local girl groups, cover bands, theatre ensembles, and now as a solo artist. After taking time to complete other goals that she set out to achieve such as completing a degree in Business Management from the University of Houston, she has now made the decision to return to the music industry. Now she’s back to fill a void in music that is needed today and to make music that will speak to generations to come.
With many musical accomplishments that span from an early age there are a few that are worth mentioning. Being the well rounded entertainer that she is, Ashley Marsé can lay claim to achievements outside of music that range from acting to dancing. Some of Ashley’s recognized performances include being a cast member in the original musical The Cotton Club, Houston’s very own popular Motown and More Revue: Dancing in the Street, being the gold medalist of the NAACP ACT-SO competition for contemporary vocals category, being an opening act for gospel legend Shirley Caesar, and winning the talent competition on the Debra Duncan Morning Show. During these years Ashley created a name for herself that would often be called on as one of Houston’s premiere up and coming artists. A name that would allow Ashley to be invited to perform at various venues and on several local radio stations in the Houston Metropolitan area.
Eventually another chapter in Ashley’s life started after an audition in a national competition for the next pop group. Mathew Knowles, who is responsible for the success of Beyoncé as well as Destiny’s Child to name a few, made it his mission to create another major girl group and held auditions for young women to showcase their talent before a panel of judges that included himself and others from the music industry. The competition was Project Popstar. Of the thousands of young ladies that came from all over the country Ashley was able to secure hers spot in the five girl group by impressing Mr. Knowles with her raw vocal abilities, sense of fashion, and charisma. Ashley and the other winners were required to go through Mathew Knowles boot camp for artist development that spanned a total of four years. The boot camp was where Ashley learned what it really took to perfect the craft of being an entertainer as their strict regimen required them to dedicate so much time to exercise, vocal training, choreography, and studio recording.
It was also during her time at Music World that she developed her skills as a song writer and her interview skills. Thanks to her time as a Project Popstar member she was allowed performing opportunities that would not have come her way had she not worked with Mr. Knowles. Some of those opportunities include the girls being featured performers for the televised Thanksgiving Day Parade, being the opening act for the annual Jingle Jam Christmas concert, opening act at the NBA All-star Event, and numerous showcases for invited industry insiders.
Ashley’s drive and determination to become successful was recognized not only by Mathew Knowles but by his entire team of in-house producers as she was often asked to demo songs that would eventually be sold to other well established artists. Word spread quickly and Ashley soon began to work with Solange Knowles and went on the road as one of her background singers.
Going on the road with Solange also allowed Ashley to get a taste of what it would be like to go on the road and the rehearsal process that is necessary in working with a live band. Although Houston’s next big pop and R&B group would not come to fruition under Mathew Knowles, Ashley is thankful for all the experience and knowledge that was gained during the three years spent as an artist in development. With the freedom to pursue other ventures in music Ashley Marsé took what she learned under the guidance of Mathew Knowles and put it to use by hitting the local scene and performing as a solo artist as well as being one of the lead singers with two of Houston’s premiere cover bands. If you ask anyone in the Houston area they will recognize the bands, Commercial Art and Password. Both bands have created a name for themselves and are the preferred bands that are called on for weddings and special events. Working with the live bands was also a great learning experience because Ashley was thrust to the forefront and entrusted to use her charisma to get the audience amped for the show they were about to give.
Ashley Marsé is currently working on a few projects that she is sure will guarantee her place in the music industry. She is writing songs, recording, and continuing to develop her craft. The drive and determination that has brought Ashley back to the industry has proven to be tough for many however it is a challenge that Ashley will gladly accept. Stay tuned to see what’s to come from this young and talented artist as she is sure to provide you with music that will touch your spirit. Her vocal style is often classified at soulful R&B with a touch of Jazz and gospel but Ashley makes it clear that she is open to all genres and can’t really be put into any one box. “Opportunities present themselves in different forms so why should I limit myself to just a few genres of music when I have the ability to share with the world my own unique interpretation.” It is clear in Ashley’s words that she is ready to take the industry by surprise with her own style of music that she classifies as “timeless”.
